Word meanings are brief study glosses, separate from the full Saheeh International translation. One Arabic word may need several English words. Read the complete translation for the sentence's meaning. Brackets mark supplied explanations; [emphasis] marks a particle with no separate English equivalent here.

How to use the transliteration

These editorial study readings keep word boundaries and grammatical endings visible. They are not a phonetic transcript: connected recitation joins sounds, and stopping may change endings. Follow the audio for recitation and pauses.

ā, ī and ū indicate long vowels; th is like “thin,” dh like “this,” and sh like “ship.” ʾ marks hamzah; ʿ marks ʿayn. ḥ, ṣ, ḍ, ṭ and ẓ distinguish Arabic letters from h, s, d, t and z. Kh, gh and q represent distinct Arabic sounds best learned by listening. Hyphens help identify attached parts of a word; they do not mark pauses.

The passage — 7:1 to 7:10

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Transliteration: Bismi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm.

Meaning: In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

كِتَٰبٌ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ فَلَا يَكُن فِى صَدْرِكَ حَرَجٌۭ مِّنْهُ لِتُنذِرَ بِهِۦ وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Translation — Saheeh International

[This is] a Book revealed to you, [O Muhammad] - so let there not be in your breast distress therefrom - that you may warn thereby and as a reminder to the believers.

kitābun unzila ilayka fa-lā yakun fī ṣadrika ḥarajun minhu li-tundhira bihi wa-dhikrā lil-muʾminīna

ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ أَوْلِيَآءَ ۗ قَلِيلًۭا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ

Translation — Saheeh International

Follow, [O mankind], what has been revealed to you from your Lord and do not follow other than Him any allies. Little do you remember.

وَكَم مِّن قَرْيَةٍ أَهْلَكْنَٰهَا فَجَآءَهَا بَأْسُنَا بَيَٰتًا أَوْ هُمْ قَآئِلُونَ

Translation — Saheeh International

And how many cities have We destroyed, and Our punishment came to them at night or while they were sleeping at noon.

فَمَا كَانَ دَعْوَىٰهُمْ إِذْ جَآءَهُم بَأْسُنَآ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ

Translation — Saheeh International

And their declaration when Our punishment came to them was only that they said, "Indeed, we were wrongdoers!"

7:6

فَلَنَسْـَٔلَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَنَسْـَٔلَنَّ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

Translation — Saheeh International

Then We will surely question those to whom [a message] was sent, and We will surely question the messengers.

فَلَنَقُصَّنَّ عَلَيْهِم بِعِلْمٍۢ ۖ وَمَا كُنَّا غَآئِبِينَ

Translation — Saheeh International

Then We will surely relate [their deeds] to them with knowledge, and We were not [at all] absent.

fa-la-naquṣṣanna ʿalayhim bi-ʿilmin wa-mā kunnā ghāʾibīna

وَٱلْوَزْنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْحَقُّ ۚ فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

Translation — Saheeh International

And the weighing [of deeds] that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy - it is they who will be the successful.

wal-waznu yawmaʾidhin al-ḥaqqu fa-man thaqulat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulāʾika humu al-mufliḥūna

وَمَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا يَظْلِمُونَ

Translation — Saheeh International

And those whose scales are light - they are the ones who will lose themselves for what injustice they were doing toward Our verses.

wa-man khaffat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulāʾika alladhīna khasirū anfusahum bi-mā kānū bi-āyātinā yaẓlimūna

وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّٰكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَٰيِشَ ۗ قَلِيلًۭا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ

Translation — Saheeh International

And We have certainly established you upon the earth and made for you therein ways of livelihood. Little are you grateful.

wa-laqad makkannākum fī al-arḍi wa-jaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyisha qalīlan mā tashkurūna
