Who makes these pages
These pages are prepared by IMATX, the Indonesian Muslim Association of Austin, Texas. We are a community organisation run by volunteers. Each week a small group of us reads a passage of the Qur'an together, and we prepare these pages for that circle.
We share them so you can use them too. Everyone is welcome to use these materials to start a halaqa with your family, your friends or your masjid. They are free. Here is how to start one.
We are learners, not scholars
We are a community of learners, not scholars. Nothing on this site is a fatwa or a religious ruling. When a question needs a ruling, for example about what is halal or haram, about worship, family or money, please ask a qualified scholar you trust.
Our pages give what the classical scholars said, and they say who said it. Where they differ, we show the difference. We do not choose for you.
Where the material comes from
- Translation. Saheeh International.
- Tafsir. Summaries of classical commentators: Ibn Kathir, al-Jalalayn, al-Qurtubi and al-Tabari. Each summary names its source.
- Hadith. Only from Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, or narrations graded sahih or hasan on Sunnah.com. Each one links to its full text there.
- Recitation. Mishary Rashid Alafasy.
- Our own words. When a page gives our own thought about a passage, it is labelled Reflection, so you can tell it apart from the scholars.
What the label at the foot of a page means
At the foot of every session page you will see how far that session has been checked. There are three levels.
- Source-checked. Every ayah, every Arabic word and every hadith in Arabic was copied from its source by a computer and checked against it, letter by letter. This shows the text matches the source. It does not mean a person has read the whole session through. Every session has this level.
- Facilitator-reviewed. The person who leads our own circle has read the whole session through and corrected what needed it.
- Scholar-reviewed. A qualified scholar has read the session. No session has this level yet. When one does, the page will say so.
Whatever the label says, these pages are our study notes, not rulings.
About the audio
The audio briefings are read by AI voices from a script we write and check. From session 8, the briefing is a sample circle: a teacher and three regular members talk through the passage, so you can hear how a session can go. They are not real people. Their voices are made with AI. The Qur'an recitation is Mishary Rashid Alafasy.
