Iblis Refuses, and Makes a Vow

The passage

Last week we read the opening ten ayat — the trust of the Book, the destroyed towns, the scales, and Allah's provision on earth. This week the surah turns to the beginning of the story: Allah shapes the children of Adam, tells the angels to bow, and one refuses.

The refusal is not a shrug. Iblis answers back with a reason — “I am better than him” — and the reason is the sin. The verdict lands in the same breath as the claim: the one who made himself great is put among the humiliated. Then he asks for time, receives it, and uses the reprieve to make a vow against us.

Eight ayat, and almost all of it is speech. It reads like a courtroom transcript, and the last word belongs to Allah.
