The Trust of the Book and the Scales

The passage

Last week was orientation — how we will read together, and the architecture of Al-A'raf as a whole. This week the text itself begins, and the first ten ayat set the terms for everything that follows.

A Book sent down, and a charge to the one who carries it: let there be no constraint in your chest because of it. Then towns that were destroyed, and the one thing their people had left to say — “indeed, we were wrongdoers.” Then a day of questioning in which both those who were sent to and the messengers themselves are asked. Then the scales, true on that day, and no one wronged by them.

And at the end, the ground under our feet: Allah established us on the earth and put our livelihood in it. The passage opens on the weight of receiving revelation and closes on how lightly we carry it — qalilan ma tashkurun, little are you thankful.
