Your first gathering

Everything for one first session with your family or friends: one passage, what to prepare, an invitation to send, and what to do next time.

Read · 3 min · For whoever leads the circle

Start with Al-A'raf 7:26–31

We suggest session 04, Ya Bani Adam: dress and adornment. Three of its six ayat begin with Yā banī Ādam, "O children of Adam", so they speak to everyone in the room. They are about clothing: the clothes Allah gave us, and the clothing of taqwa, which is better. The passage is short, it needs no background, and it works well with newcomers and guests.

Its pages are always open. Nobody needs to sign in.

Get ready: about 40 minutes

This is for the leader. Everyone else can come with nothing prepared.

  1. Listen to the sample circle (17 minutes). A teacher and four members go through the passage ayah by ayah.
  2. Read the Facilitator guide (4 minutes). It has the running order for the hour and the points to handle with care.
  3. Read the tafsir on ayat 26, 28 and 31 (about 15 minutes).
  4. Skim the two core hadith, Sahih Muslim 3028 and Sahih al-Bukhari 6527.
  5. Print the handout (3 pages), one for each person, or send the link.
  6. Ask someone to recite. If nobody wants to, play the recitation on the Verses page (2 minutes 50 seconds).

No time to prepare? Session 04 also has circle cards: nine cards that anyone can read aloud to run the session in about 45 minutes, with no preparation.

On the day

Your second gathering

The next passage follows straight on: session 05, Al-A'raf 7:32–36, Who Forbade the Good Things. Its pages may ask you to sign in once they are four weeks old. It is free, with Google or with a code sent to your email.

Or go back to the start of the surah with session 01, Al-A'raf 7:1–10, which is always open. You do not need to follow our weeks. See all sessions.

Tell us how it went

If you run a session, we would love to hear how it went: how many came, what helped, what was hard. Send us a short email. A real person reads it, and it helps us make the pages better for other circles.

New to all this? How to start a halaqa in your circle has the whole picture.
