Al-A'raf 7:26–31 · about 60 minutes
No time to prepare? Use the circle cards (45 min).
Before you start
One small step is enough
Joining the circle? There is nothing to prepare. If you have a few minutes, pick one of these.
Leading the circle? Allow about 40 minutes. Listen to the sample circle (17 minutes), read the tafsir on ayat 26, 28 and 31, and skim the two core hadith. The Facilitator guide starts with this list.
The passage
The three passages before this one follow the story of Adam: the honour given to him, the refusal of Iblis, and the Garden. The previous passage ended with Adam and his wife sent down to earth, with a place to live and a time to stay. Now the surah turns from them to us.
Three times in six ayat Allah calls Yā banī Ādam, O children of Adam. First comes a gift: clothing to cover us and to make us look good — and a better clothing, taqwa. Then a warning: do not let Shaytan do to you what he did to your parents. In the middle are people who did something shameful and said Allah had told them to, and the answer: Allah never commands indecency. He commands justice and sincere worship.
The last ayah is one many of us know already: take your adornment to every masjid, eat and drink, and do not overdo it.
- Read 7:26–31 with the Arabic and a translation you can follow.
- Say in your own words what the “clothing of taqwa” is, and why Allah calls it best.
- Name one place in your week where you will keep a limit, as ayah 31 asks.

A sample circle
A halaqa in sound, to listen to before you run your own: a teacher and four members go through all six ayat, each one recited first, and ask the questions for the discussion. The members are fictional and the voices are AI. Play it on the way to work or while cooking; the player remembers where you stopped.
