Narrations that sit alongside this passage.
Start with the two core narrations:why ayah 31 came down (Sahih Muslim 3028), and how we will be gathered (Sahih al-Bukhari 6527). The other three are there if the conversation reaches them.
Reading guide: the English passages below are plain-language summaries of narrations reported from the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions, written for this session. They are not direct quotations and not translations. The Arabic is quoted from the Sunnah.com page named beneath each one, and the full source entry with its chain is one click away. Connections to the verses are editorial.
Summary: Ibn ʿAbbas said that in the time before Islam a woman would go around the House with no clothes on. She would ask who would lend her a cloth to cover herself, and she would say a line of verse: today some of it shows, or all of it, and whatever shows I do not make lawful. Then this ayah was revealed: take your adornment at every masjid.
Connection to the verses · editorial reflection: This is the occasion of ayah 31, and it explains ayah 28 as well: a practice that stripped people of their dignity, carried on as if it were worship. The ayah gave that dignity back. See the tafsir unit →
For the facilitator: Read this one plainly and briefly. The point is what the ayah restored, not the details of what it ended.
Core reading
How we will be gathered
Summary: The Prophet ﷺ said that people will be gathered barefoot, unclothed and uncircumcised. ʿAʾishah asked whether men and women would then look at each other. He answered that the matter will be far too serious for that to concern them.
Connection to the verses · editorial reflection: Ayah 29 ends as He began you, so you will return, and Ibn Kathir reports Ibn Jarir supporting that reading with the same narration in Ibn ʿAbbas's version. The passage begins with the gift of clothing and ends with the day when no cloth will be left — only the clothing of taqwa. See the tafsir unit →

The announcement at Hajj
Summary: In the year before the Farewell Hajj, when the Prophet ﷺ put Abu Bakr in charge of the pilgrims, Abu Bakr sent Abu Hurayrah with a group of people on the Day of Sacrifice to announce: after this year no idolater will make Hajj, and no one will go around the House unclothed.
Connection to the verses · editorial reflection: Ayah 28 answered the old practice and ayah 31 replaced it. This narration is the day the practice was ended in public, at the House itself. See the tafsir unit →

A third, a third, a third
Summary: The Prophet ﷺ said that no person fills a container worse than his own stomach. A few mouthfuls that keep his back upright are enough for the son of Adam. If he must eat more, then a third for his food, a third for his drink and a third for his breath.
Narrated by al-Miqdam ibn Maʿdikarib.
Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 2380 · Book 36, Hadith 77 · Grade: Sahih (Darussalam, as listed on Sunnah.com); at-Tirmidhi calls it hasan sahih · Full narration on Sunnah.com ↗
Connection to the verses · editorial reflection: Ibn Kathir cites this narration on eat and drink, and do not be excessive. It gives the limit in ayah 31 a shape you can picture at the table. See the tafsir unit →

Born on the fitrah
Summary: The Prophet ﷺ said that every child is born on the fitrah, and it is the parents who make him a Jew, a Christian or a Magian — just as an animal gives birth to a young one whole and sound. Do you see any born with its ear cut?
Connection to the verses · editorial reflection: Ibn Kathir brings this narration to ayat 29–30. Everyone begins with a disposition to know Allah; ayah 30 says what pulls some away — taking the devils as allies. See the tafsir unit →
For the facilitator: Guests of other faiths may be in the room. Explain fitrah as the natural disposition to recognise Allah, and keep the focus on what the ayah says pulls people away, not on other communities.
For the facilitator: Use the linked source text when quoting a narration verbatim.
