Al-A'raf 7:32–36 · about 60 minutes

Before you start

One small step is enough

Joining the circle? There is nothing to prepare. If you have a few minutes, pick one of these.

Leading the circle? Allow about 40 minutes. Listen to the sample circle (16 minutes), read the tafsir on ayat 32, 33 and 35, and skim the two core hadith. The Facilitator guide starts with this list.

The passage

The previous passage ended with adornment at every masjid: eat and drink, and do not overdo it. This passage begins with the people on the other side of that limit. The commentators say they went around the House unclothed and kept good food from themselves, and they called it religion.

Ayah 32 answers them with a question: who has forbidden the adornment Allah brought out for His servants, and the good things of provision? They are for the believers in this life, and the commentators add that everyone else shares them here. On the Day of Resurrection they are the believers' alone.

Ayah 33 then says what Allah has actually forbidden. It is not food and not clothing. It is shameful deeds, open and hidden; sin; wronging people without right; joining partners with Allah; and saying about Allah what you do not know.

The passage ends with a fixed term for every nation, not an hour late and not an hour early, and the last “O children of Adam” in the surah. When messengers come with the ayat, whoever has taqwa and sets things right has nothing to fear. Those who deny them and are too proud to follow them are the companions of the Fire.

  • Read 7:32–36 with the Arabic and a translation you can follow.
  • Name the five things ayah 33 says Allah has actually forbidden.
  • Say what ayah 35 pairs with taqwa, and one thing you could set right this week.

A sample circle

A halaqa in sound, to listen to before you run your own: a teacher and four members go through all five ayat, each one recited first, and ask the questions for the discussion. The members are fictional and the voices are AI. Play it on the way to work or while cooking; the player remembers where you stopped.
