Adam and
the Garden

The passage

Last week ended with a vow. Iblis, sent down, told Allah he would sit and wait on the straight path and come at the children of Adam from every side — and that most of them would not be found grateful. This week we watch him keep it, on the first two people there were.

The passage opens generously. Adam and his wife may live in the Garden and eat from anywhere in it. One tree is out of bounds, and that is the whole of the restriction. Then comes the whisper — and notice what it goes after. Iblis does not say the tree is good. He tells them what Allah really meant by forbidding it, and he swears by Allah that he is only giving them good advice.

They eat. What they had not noticed about themselves is suddenly plain to them, and they start covering themselves with leaves. Allah calls to them: did I not forbid you this, and did I not tell you he was an open enemy?

What they say back is why this passage is not simply a sad story. No explanation, no blaming the one who lied to them. Four words: our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. Then the sending down — which turns out to come with a place to live, provision, a fixed term, and a promise that the earth is not the end of the matter.
