Al-A'raf 7:11–14
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
7:11
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ ثُمَّ صَوَّرْنَٰكُمْ ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِءَادَمَ فَسَجَدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ لَمْ يَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ
And We have certainly created you, [O Mankind], and given you [human] form. Then We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was not of those who prostrated.
7:12
قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسْجُدَ إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍۢ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍۢ
[Allah] said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" [Satan] said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."
7:13
قَالَ فَٱهْبِطْ مِنْهَا فَمَا يَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا فَٱخْرُجْ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰغِرِينَ
[Allah] said, "Descend from Paradise, for it is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased.
7:14
قَالَ أَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
[Satan] said, "Reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."
Al-A'raf 7:15–18
7:15
قَالَ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ
[Allah] said, "Indeed, you are of those reprieved."
7:16
قَالَ فَبِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَٰطَكَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
[Satan] said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.
7:17
ثُمَّ لَءَاتِيَنَّهُم مِّنۢ بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَٰنِهِمْ وَعَن شَمَآئِلِهِمْ ۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَٰكِرِينَ
Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You]."
7:18
قَالَ ٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا مَذْءُومًۭا مَّدْحُورًۭا ۖ لَّمَن تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
[Allah] said, "Get out of Paradise, reproached and expelled. Whoever follows you among them - I will surely fill Hell with you, all together."
Three questions
Q1
Iblis’s claim to be better than Adam led him to reject a clear command, and the verdict in ayah 13 puts the one who was tatakabbara among as-saghirin, the humiliated. In everyday life, what makes it difficult for us to accept correction, and what would help us respond with humility?
Q2
Iblis vows to sit on Allah’s straight path and wait. A narration describes Shaytan sitting on the road to something good, at the moment it was about to cost something. When have you felt discouraged from something good you meant to do, and what helped you go ahead?
Q3
Iblis ends his vow with “You will not find most of them grateful” — shakirin, the word behind Indonesian syukur. Ibn Kathir reports Ibn 'Abbas reading the grateful here as those who worship Allah alone. If shukr in this ayah means faith showing itself and not just a good feeling, what does it look like in an ordinary week?
Four words
صَوَّرْنَٰكُمْ ṣawwarnākum We fashioned you (7:11) · تَتَكَبَّرَ tatakabbara you act arrogantly (7:13) · ٱلصَّٰغِرِينَ aṣ-ṣāghirīn the humiliated (7:13) · شَٰكِرِينَ shākirīn grateful (7:17)
