Verses & audio

Arabic verses, Saheeh International translation, word meanings and recitation.

Read · 4 min

Seven ayat, 3:16 of recitation. Follow along, or play one ayah at a time.

Reading guide: the Arabic is the Uthmani text. The English is Saheeh International, quoted. The word-by-word glosses and card transliterations are editorial study adaptations with reference to the Quranic Arabic Corpus. Full-ayah transliterations are reproduced from AlQuran Cloud’s en.transliteration edition, with six editorial corrections recorded in the reading key below. Neither is part of Saheeh International.

Hear the passage

Mishary Rashid Alafasy · ayat 52–58 · 3:16, measured from the audio files.

Each ayah also has its own player below.

How to use the transliteration

Both transliterations on this page are reading aids, not pronunciation systems. If you read Arabic, ignore them and read the line above. They follow two different conventions, because they come from two different sources.

The word-by-word cards use long vowels ā ī ū and diacritics to distinguish Arabic consonants: for example, ḥ represents ح and ṣ represents ص. In the Corpus convention, an apostrophe can represent hamzah or mark sukūn (no following vowel); ʿ represents ʿayn. Thus the apostrophe in id'ʿū does not indicate a hamzah. See the Corpus transcription guide.

The full-ayah transliteration is quoted from its source, which doubles the vowel letter instead of using a macron and does not mark the heavy letters. The card’s taḍarruʿan reads tadarru'anw there, and nakidan reads nakidaa. We keep the source’s spelling rather than re-spell a quoted text, with six exceptions. At ayah 54 the edition has qiyaamin where the Arabic says ayyām, days; we print aiyaamin. Its other slips: taa weelah at ayah 53, split in two; Rabbakkumul and summmas tawaa at ayah 54, with a letter doubled or tripled; and at ayah 57 fa annzalnaa and minn kullis, each with an extra n. We print taaweelah, Rabbakumul, summas tawaa, fa anzalnaa and min kullis. Each follows the edition’s own spelling elsewhere: it writes Rabbakumul, aiyaamin and summas tawaa at 10:3, taaweeluh at 10:39 (and taaweeluhoo later in ayah 53 itself), anzala at 2:22 and min at 7:53. Those six corrections are ours, not the source’s, and a reader who knows Arabic still needs to check them. Everything else in these lines is left exactly as the edition has it, including spellings that look odd, such as yatlu buhoo at ayah 54, which is one word.

Use either aid alongside the recitation. Listen to the reciter for pronunciation; transliteration cannot capture every recitation detail.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Al-A'raf opens with the basmalah; it is not counted as ayah 1, and this session begins at ayah 52.

وَلَقَدْ جِئْنَٰهُم بِكِتَٰبٍۢ فَصَّلْنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ هُدًۭى وَرَحْمَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يُؤْمِنُونَ

Do they await except its result? The Day its result comes those who had ignored it before will say, "The messengers of our Lord had come with the truth, so are there [now] any intercessors to intercede for us or could we be sent back to do other than we used to do?" They will have lost themselves, and lost from them is what they used to invent.

Translation — Saheeh International

Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.

Sources and reading notes

  • Arabic: the Uthmani text as served by api.alquran.cloud, copied without alteration.
  • English: Saheeh International, quoted. Bracketed words are the translators'. At ayah 54, “[He created]” follows one way of reading the sun, the moon and the stars; the tafsir page gives the other.
  • Three word glosses at ayah 54 follow Saheeh International rather than the word-by-word source: ayyām is “days”, where the source has “epochs”, and istawā ʿalā is “established Himself above”, where the source has “He ascended on”. What the commentators say about both is on the tafsir page.
  • At ayah 57 the Arabic here reads bushran, “as good tidings”. Other well-known recitations read this word differently; the tafsir page notes them.
  • Recitation: Mishary Rashid Alafasy, 128 kbps, from cdn.islamic.network. The 3:16 figure was measured from the files, not estimated.
  • Word glosses and card transliterations: editorial adaptations with reference to the Quranic Arabic Corpus. Full-ayah transliterations: AlQuran Cloud, en.transliteration, reproduced from that edition, with the six corrections described in the reading key. These aids are separate from Saheeh International.
