Al-A'raf 7:52–58 · about 60 minutes
Before you start
One small step is enough
Joining the circle? There is nothing to prepare. If you have a few minutes, pick one of these.
Leading the circle? Allow about 45 minutes. Listen to the sample circle (19 minutes), read the tafsir on ayat 54, 55–56 and 58, and skim the two core hadith. The Facilitator guide starts with this list.
The passage
The previous passage ended with people who forgot the meeting of their Day. This passage begins with the Book they were given. Allah brought them a Book, explained with knowledge, as guidance and mercy. On the Day its promise comes true, they ask for someone to intercede for them, or to be sent back.
Then the passage turns to our Lord, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, covers the night with the day, and holds the sun, the moon and the stars under His command. Straight after this comes a command for us: “Call upon your Lord in humility and privately.” Call on Him in fear and in hope, because His mercy is near to those who do good.
The passage ends with rain. Allah sends the winds as good news, drives heavy clouds to a dead land and brings out fruit. “Thus will We bring forth the dead.” Good land gives its plants easily. Bad land gives only a little, with difficulty.
- Read 7:52–58 with the Arabic and a translation you can follow.
- Say what ayat 55–56 teach about how we call on Allah.
- Explain, in the commentators’ words, how the rain on a dead land in ayah 57 points to the resurrection.

A sample circle
A halaqa in sound, to listen to before you run your own: a teacher and four members go through all seven ayat, each one recited first, and ask the questions for the discussion. The members are fictional and the voices are AI. Play it on the way to work or while cooking; the player remembers where you stopped.
