Al-A'raf 7:44–51 · about 60 minutes

Before you start

One small step is enough

Joining the circle? There is nothing to prepare. If you have a few minutes, pick one of these.

Leading the circle? Allow about 45 minutes. Listen to the sample circle (19 minutes), read the tafsir on ayat 46–47, 49 and 50, and skim the two core hadith. The Facilitator guide starts with this list.

The passage

The previous passage ended with the people of Paradise praising Allah, and a call to them: this is Paradise. Here the calling goes on, across a partition. The people of Paradise ask the people of the Fire: “Have you found what your Lord promised to be true?” They say yes.

On the heights of the partition are men who know both groups by their marks. They greet the people of Paradise with salam. They have not entered it yet, but they hope to. The surah takes its name from this place, al-Aʿrāf. The scholars do not agree on who these men are, and we will look at their views together.

Then the men on the heights speak to men they know in the Fire: your numbers and your pride did not help you. The people of the Fire ask for a little water and are told it is forbidden to them. The passage ends with those who took their religion as play: “So today We will forget them just as they forgot the meeting of this Day of theirs…” The commentators explain what that forgetting means.

  • Read 7:44–51 with the Arabic and a translation you can follow.
  • Say who calls to whom in this passage, and what each call says.
  • Describe the men on the heights from ayat 46–47, and name two of the scholars’ views on who they are.

A sample circle

A halaqa in sound, to listen to before you run your own: a teacher and four members go through all eight ayat, each one recited first, and ask the questions for the discussion. The members are fictional and the voices are AI. Play it on the way to work or while cooking; the player remembers where you stopped.
