Verses & audio

Arabic verses, Saheeh International translation, word meanings and recitation.

5 min readWednesday 4 November 202624 Jumada al-Ula 1448

Read · 5 min

Twelve ayat, 4:29 of recitation. Follow along, or play one ayah at a time.

Reading guide: the Arabic is the Uthmani text. The English is Saheeh International, quoted. The word-by-word glosses and card transliterations are editorial study adaptations with reference to the Quranic Arabic Corpus. Full-ayah transliterations are reproduced from AlQuran Cloud’s en.transliteration edition, with eight editorial corrections recorded in the reading key below. Neither is part of Saheeh International.

Hear the passage

Mishary Rashid Alafasy · ayat 73–84 · 4:29, measured from the audio files.

Each ayah also has its own player below.

How to use the transliteration

Both transliterations on this page are reading aids, not pronunciation systems. If you read Arabic, ignore them and read the line above. They follow two different conventions, because they come from two different sources.

The word-by-word cards use long vowels ā ī ū and diacritics to distinguish Arabic consonants: for example, ḥ represents ح and ṣ represents ص. In the Corpus convention, an apostrophe can represent hamzah or mark sukūn (no following vowel); ʿ represents ʿayn. Thus the apostrophe in uʿ'budū does not indicate a hamzah. See the Corpus transcription guide.

The full-ayah transliteration is quoted from its source, which doubles the vowel letter instead of using a macron and does not mark the heavy letters. It also writes the letter ث as s: the card’s thamūda reads Samooda there, and jāthimīna reads jaasimeen. We keep the source’s spelling rather than re-spell a quoted text, except for eight slips, each corrected to the spelling the same edition uses elsewhere. At ayah 78 the two key words are both wrong: rajftu drops a vowel and jaasimmeen doubles a letter; we print rajfatu and jaasimeen, as the edition writes them at 7:91. At ayah 84 the edition puts an ʿayn mark on amtarnaa, drops it from ʿaaqibatul, and doubles the j of mujrimeen; we follow its spelling at 26:173, 27:69 and 7:40. The other three: Wazkkurooo at ayah 74 (the edition writes wazkurooo at 7:69), antumqawmum at ayah 81, run together (antum qawmun at 27:55), and yatatah haroon at ayah 82, split in two (yatatahharoon at 27:56). Those eight corrections are ours, not the source’s, and a reader who knows Arabic still needs to check them. Everything else in these lines is left exactly as the edition has it, including its usual way of splitting some words, such as mala ul at ayah 75. In this edition an apostrophe usually stands for ʿayn, but in yaa qawmi' budul laaha at ayah 73 and yaa Saalihu' tinaa at ayah 77 it only marks where two words run together.

Use either aid alongside the recitation. Listen to the reciter for pronunciation; transliteration cannot capture every recitation detail.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Al-A'raf opens with the basmalah; it is not counted as ayah 1, and this session begins at ayah 73.

Translation — Saheeh International

And to the Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. This is the she-camel of Allah [sent] to you as a sign. So leave her to eat within Allah's land and do not touch her with harm, lest there seize you a painful punishment.

Sources and reading notes

  • Arabic: the Uthmani text as served by api.alquran.cloud, copied without alteration.
  • English: Saheeh International, quoted. Bracketed words are the translators'. The quotation marks are shown as the translation gives them: Salih's words open in ayah 73 and close at the end of ayah 74, and Lut's open in ayah 80 and close at the end of ayah 81.
  • One small change in how the translation is shown: at ayah 73 the text we receive has a stray space in “Allah 's land”. We show it as “Allah's land”. No word of the translation is changed.
  • Three word glosses follow Saheeh International rather than the word-by-word source: nāqatu at ayah 73 is “(is the) she-camel”, where the source has “(is) a she-camel”; ālāʾa at ayah 74 is “(the) favors”, where the source has “(the) Bounties”; and shahwatan at ayah 81 is “with desire”, as Saheeh International has it. At ayah 83 the source glosses al-ghābirīna as “those who stayed behind”, where Saheeh International has “those who remained”; the tafsir page gives the commentators’ four readings.
  • Recitation: Mishary Rashid Alafasy, 128 kbps, from cdn.islamic.network. The 4:29 figure was measured from the files, not estimated.
  • Word glosses and card transliterations: editorial adaptations with reference to the Quranic Arabic Corpus. Full-ayah transliterations: AlQuran Cloud, en.transliteration, reproduced from that edition, with the eight corrections described in the reading key. These aids are separate from Saheeh International.
